(d) The Japanese purification ritual

As with the state's control of Buddhism, for example, all other religious matters, too, were brought under its control. The Japanese ōharae (great purification ritual) is a case in point. During Emperor Tenmu's reign this purification ritual, which had until then been performed in the local regions, became a state ritual. This meant that the former kunitsukuri ruling class had to surrender these ritual rites to the central government. We return to the purification ritual in detail in the concluding chapter.
